It’s World Cancer Day 2019

I'm sorry it has been a while since my last update. Between the holidays and my chemo treatments, I’ve been trying to rest as much as possible.

I took a break from wearing my recluse cat lady hat and tonight I find myself in a hotel in Sacramento, where I am attending a conference that seeks to improve access to care for California’s uninsured populations. While it’s taking a lot of energy to be here, I recognize I have to continue connecting with others and developing myself so I can run my business. It’s also helpful to hear about the most pressing issues facing our healthcare system.

An issue that didn’t come up today, but that is important to me, is that today is apparently world cancer day. My interpretation of this is that it’s a day to reflect on this terrible disease and let those around you know you care, as we are all at least indirectly affected. Some ways to do this that come to mind:
  • Think about someone you have loved and lost to this disease, and if you are into prayer, maybe let them know you’re thinking of them.
  • Reach out to someone battling this disease currently, perhaps by sending them a message of support.
  • Make a donation to an organization that provides care, conducts research or provides other supports to people fighting cancer.
No pressure for anyone to execute on any of this, but those are nice thoughts on this day.

Just a couple of weeks ago I was moved after seeing a number of inspirational quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King, and I pulled one that spoke to me. I was reminded of the importance of continuing to stay motivated even when things are hard, and there are hard days. It speaks to my disease, as it also speaks to many of the changes I am seeing in my environment.  The year 2018 was so challenging on many levels, including the political situation that has only worsened over time. While I still try to stomach the news, it has become increasingly difficult to absorb the world we are living in. And while there are many bad things happening, there are glimmers of hope that I continue to see and look forward to seeing more of in the coming year. For me, seeing the record number of women elected to congress was inspiring and shows that when you don't like what you see around you, you have the power to change it. So today, as I dig into my strength on world cancer day, I can see any of us planting a seed to make someone’s life (or after life) by supporting them however we can.
