Setbacks and Gains
New milestone and challenges
As of last Friday, I celebrated two pretty significant milestones related to my radiation:
- I am now 2/3 of the way done with my proton radiation treatment. Yay me!
- The cranio-spinal portion of my treatment has concluded. Moving forward, the Center will focus exclusively on treating my brain with “power boosters.” My remaining treatments will take less time, as they won’t have to align my body. Another plus is that I get to wear my clothes moving forward, which will also save some time and give me back some modesty ;)
While I am happy to be at this place, I will also admit that the cumulative effects of the radiation are taking effect and I experienced some set backs last week. My fatigue is increasing, so my energy levels continue to vary throughout the day. A side effect I didn’t expect was “radiation burn” on my face, which looks like a bad, spotty sunburn. These burns are getting darker, but are a normal side effect of the radiation. I also had a gout flare up last week, which required new medications, which unfortunately doubled-down the increased nausea I was starting to feel as a result of the radiation. All of these factors have resulted in me taking lots of medications to offset the effects of the radiation and/or other medications. When I think about what it would be like with traditional radiation, I can live with all these things.

Family & Friends are the Best Medicine
It’s been nice connecting with people I love since last updating my blog. I have had a few visitors, including my parents, Rocky and my brother, Agustin (Agi). Of course Eric has continued to come up most weekends. It has been nice to share Villa Esperanza, and welcome them. Everyone unanimously agreed that Rosy and I created a peaceful space for recovery. My mom and Rocky took over the kitchen more than once to provide us with some excellent home cooking. Agi brought me such a sense of home and sense of humor, which I needed.

Once again, thank you for following me on this journey. I plan to be home at the end of October, soon after I wrap up my radiation treatment. After that, I’ll be meeting with my UCSF cancer care team in mid-November to better understand my chemotherapy plan.
Until then, hugs,
CD
